What is a standalone camera?
Standalone CCTV cameras are the cameras that works itself. Does not need other devices like DVR and HDD for storage and connectivity. Only power connection is required. It can be installed and operated using a smart phone by installing its application. It’s easy to use and cost saving. But also has limitations.
Standalone CCTV cameras mainly fall into following types:-
- Camera with Memory card– To install single or two cameras, without spending for DVR, HDD and cable, this kind of camera is useful. It comes in indoor and outdoor options.
- Standalone PTZ & 3600 camera– There are security and electronics companies that provide such cameras. It has a few limitations yet many advantages. Mainly, requires Wi-Fi to setup the cameras, which is very unnecessary at times.
- Standalone 4G camera– the feature of adding a 4G SIM card in the camera is revolutionary. The possibilities are endless. The 4G SIM card provides internet connectivity for the camera in which it is inserted. There is still scope for further development such as providing internet connectivity to other cameras by creating it’s on Wi-Fi network.

Limitations:
- As data stored on memory card, memory card is compatible only up to 128 GB or 256 GB as of now. Hence, increasing recording capacity is practically impossible.
- Monitoring depends on network service provider’s network connectivity and internet speed in that locality. Uploading bandwidth matters for CCTV cameras.
- non-4G cameras requires Wi-Fi for installation.
- Continuous monitoring is practically impossible.
- Safeguarding the recording is a task- The recording is stored on a memory card, so if the camera is damaged or is stolen, there is no backup of recording.
- Depending upon the brand and software, resetting the preset camera may be difficult for an amateur.
